Since the emergence of the UNCRC (1989), UK governments have been slow to implement it (see Lansdown, 1994), and much work on, with and for children has taken on a political slant in the UK, with researchers blending the ‘voices of children’ with rights-oriented commentary and recommendations. This trend towards work arising from the UNCRC has been noticed in some other European countries (see section 6), but less so in others, which may reflect researchers’ satisfaction with their government’s implementation of the UNCRC, or less critical views of their society in general, or national traditions shaping the focus of research – for instance on education.

This is also a rightsrelated and practice-oriented point: children will feel valued only if they can contribute to societal well-being, and if their contributions are recognized and valued. These ways of thinking about children and childhood are somewhat different from those of developmental psychology, which, though it has changed in the last 30 years, retains some specific focuses that differentiate it from sociological approaches. ); on the individual; and on deviations from normal development requiring interventions to restore children to normality.
